Yesterday, the Trump administration rescinded important protections initiated by the Obama administration to guarantee the right of transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identities in public schools.
Rolling back these rules is unfair, discriminatory and contradicts our nation’s core value of equality.
The fact is that trans kids are especially vulnerable to bullying. The trans community as a whole faces high rates of violence, murder and suicide. Tragically, studies have estimated that 41 percent of trans or gender non-conforming people have attempted suicide; 92 percent of these individuals report attempting suicide before the age of 25.
It is on us to ensure our schools are safe spaces for all our children. That’s why I’ve taken action by co-sponsoring H.R. 3185, the Equality Act, to provide anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people across key areas of life, including employment, housing, credit, education and more. I also co-sponsored H.R. 846, the Student Non-Discrimination Act to prohibit discrimination in public schools based on actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.
Safe schools that foster healthy, happy kids who can focus on math, history, science and reading should be our priority and the priority of the federal government. That’s why I’m not going to stop fighting to ensure trans kids have the same opportunity to get an education as any other kid.
All my best,
